Good wipers matter most when you can least afford to see badly: heavy rain and night driving. The rubber hardens and cracks with sun and age.
How often
Around every 6 to 12 months. Hot sun, ice and dirt wear them out faster.
Signs they’re worn
Streaks or smears across the glass.
Squeaking, chattering or skipping.
A strip of water left behind each pass.
Visible cracks or splits in the rubber.
Bent or loose arms.
Make them last
Wipe the blades with a damp cloth now and then.
Never run them on a dry windshield.
Lift them off the glass in freezing weather so they don’t stick.
Keep the washer fluid topped up.
Common questions
Can I change them myself?
Usually yes: most blades just clip on and off. Make sure you buy the right length for each side.
