Lane departure warning light: what it means.

The car’s lane-keeping system is on, off, or has a fault. It uses a camera behind the windshield to see the lines on the road.

Can I keep driving?

Safe to drive. The system just may not warn you if you drift out of your lane.

What to do

  1. Check whether it’s just switched off. There’s usually a button near the steering wheel.
  2. Clean the windshield around the camera, behind the mirror.
  3. The system can’t read faded lines, snow, glare or heavy rain, so it may switch itself off. This is normal.
  4. If a fault message stays on in good conditions, the camera may need re-aligning, for example after a windshield replacement.

General guidance, not a diagnosis. Warning lights vary between cars, so check your owner's manual too. If you're ever unsure or the car feels wrong, stop and call for help.
