How long a car battery lasts, and signs it’s dying
A car battery usually gives warning before it fails. Catching the signs lets you replace it on your terms instead of at the roadside.
How long it lasts
Typically 3 to 5 years. Hot climates, very cold winters, short trips and leaving lights on all shorten that.
Signs it’s on the way out
The engine cranks slowly when you start it.
Headlights dim at idle or when you start the car.
A clicking sound but no start.
The battery or charging warning light comes on.
The battery case looks swollen, or there is white or blue crust on the terminals.
The battery is more than about four years old.
Test it
Many tire shops, auto parts stores and garages test a battery for free in a minute. It is worth doing before winter.
Make it last
Take longer drives now and then so it can recharge.
Keep the terminals clean and tight.
Switch off lights and accessories before turning the engine off.
If you won’t drive for weeks, use a battery maintainer.
Common questions
If the battery warning light is on, is it the battery?
Not always. It can also mean the alternator isn’t charging. Either way, the car may stop soon, so get it checked quickly.
Can I jump-start any car?
Most, but follow the manual: wrong cable order can damage electronics. Some hybrids and electric cars have special rules.
General guidance, not professional advice. Intervals are typical ranges and vary by car, so check your owner’s manual and ask a qualified mechanic if you’re unsure.
