Reduced engine power warning (limp mode): what it means.
The car has noticed a fault and cut its power to protect the engine or gearbox. This is often called limp mode. The cause can range from a sensor problem to a throttle or turbo fault.
Can I keep driving?
Drive gently to a safe place or a garage. Don’t overtake or push the car, and get it checked soon.
What to do
Pull over safely, switch the engine off, wait a minute and restart. This sometimes clears a one-off fault.
If the power stays reduced, drive slowly and keep clear of fast roads where you can.
Note any other lights that came on, such as the check engine light, and tell the mechanic.
Book a diagnostic scan as soon as possible.
General guidance, not a diagnosis. Warning lights vary between cars, so check your owner's manual too. If you're ever unsure or the car feels wrong, stop and call for help.
