Low engine oil level light: what it means.

The engine is low on oil. On some cars this is a separate light from the red oil-can pressure warning; on others it shows as a message.

Can I keep driving?

Add oil as soon as you safely can. Don’t keep driving for long, and stop at once if the red oil pressure light comes on.

What to do

  1. Park on level ground and switch the engine off. Wait about ten minutes so the oil drains back.
  2. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it, push it back in fully and read the level. It should sit between the two marks.
  3. If it is low, add the oil grade printed in your owner’s manual a little at a time, checking again as you go.
  4. If you have to top up often, the engine may be burning or leaking oil. Have it looked at.

General guidance, not a diagnosis. Warning lights vary between cars, so check your owner's manual too. If you're ever unsure or the car feels wrong, stop and call for help.
