Loose fuel cap warning light: what it means.

The car’s fuel system detected a leak of vapor, and the most common cause is a fuel cap that isn’t tight or has a worn seal.

Can I keep driving?

It is safe to keep driving. Tighten the cap until it clicks. The light may take a day or two of driving to go out.

What to do

  1. Stop somewhere safe and turn the engine off.
  2. Remove the fuel cap, check the rubber seal is not cracked, and screw it back on until it clicks.
  3. Drive normally. The light can take a few trips to clear on its own.
  4. If it stays on for more than a week, have the code read at a shop. It could be a different vapor leak.

General guidance, not a diagnosis. Warning lights vary between cars, so check your owner's manual too. If you're ever unsure or the car feels wrong, stop and call for help.
